A major update for modern homes
Amendment 2 brought wide-ranging changes for fire protection, surge protection, RCDs and homes that generate or store electricity.
Why it changed
IET background
Homes now contain more electronics, renewable generation and high-energy equipment than older electrical systems were designed around.
Important: This is a homeowner-friendly summary of the principal domestic changes, not the full text of BS 7671 or project-specific advice. Existing installations do not automatically become unsafe because the standard changes. Amendment 4 was published on 15 April 2026; the previous edition is withdrawn on 15 October 2026.
